The Death Of A Black Slave Clearing A Table - 1260 Words

â€Å"Watch yourself,† the bartender mutters at a black slave clearing a table at the local tavern. â€Å"Damn niggers can’t even walk in a straight line nowadays.† Kevin, sitting at the bar, stares down, unsure of what to think. He looks around and notices another white man at the bar, nodding in agreement. â€Å"They’re not even worth the trouble of feeding and clothing them,† the patron responds, causing the bartender to chuckle. The bartender casually lights a hand rolled cigar. The aroma of smoke fills Kevin s nostrils, causing him to suppress a cough. Blowing smoke, the bartender asks Kevin, â€Å"What’s your story? I haven t seen you around here before. You married?† Kevin sips his drink. â€Å"I’m married, but I haven t seen her in years.† â€Å"In years? Are you guys still together? That sounds like a complicated story.† If only he knew. Complicated indeed. How Kevin wished he could convey the truth, but the truth was so far fetched. Being married to a black woman in the 1800s would surely get him killed, or at the very least, hurt. Kevin has been living in a small town in early 1800s South Carolina for about a year now, after time traveling back from 1970s California. He is still still trying to orient himself with the race standards of this time period. Kevin shrugs and says, â€Å"You really don’t want to hear the details. How about you? You married?† â€Å"Yeah I am.
